The Biomedical Equipment Technology Program at Texas State Technical College Harlingen was established in September 1985. This program offers a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology. A primary emphasis of the curriculum of the program is in the application of scientific and engineering knowledge and methods combined with the required technical skills. In addition to the core technical courses, the curriculum also encompasses the elements of general education requirements.
During its existence, the program has experienced a tremendous success due to the support from industry and the quality of its graduates. The success translates to a high placement percentage for program graduates. Current career opportunities abound due to the high demand that is presently being experienced and the anticipated job growth in this industry sector. Due to the increase in medical knowledge, the dependence on technology has also increased because advances in medicine are directly linked to advances in technology. This technology comes in the form of sophisticated equipment that physicians rely on heavily to properly diagnose and treat patients. This equipment must in turn be kept in proper working order at all time so that the delivery of care is not interrupted. Future employment figures predict that the demand (available jobs) will be greater than the available supply (graduates). This ensures career opportunities with competitive compensation
