Sexual Harassment Statement

Statement on Sexual Harassment

“Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities receiving Federal financial assistance.” (Department of Education Office of Civil Rights)

 

Sexual harassment is a form of gender discrimination and therefore prohibited under Title IX.  “Sexual harassment is conduct that is  

  • Sexual in nature
  • Unwelcomed, and
  • Denies or limits a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from a school’s education program.”   (Department of Education Office of Civil Rights)  

 

The following are examples of types of conduct exhibited by students, housing residents, college employees, or any other individual toward a TSTC housing resident that may constitute sexual harassment and should be reported:

  • Inappropriate touching, patting, or pinching
  • Physical assault or coerced sexual activity
  • Obscene phone calls, texts, email, or gestures
  • Badgering someone for a date
  • Repeatedly making inappropriate sexual comments or unwanted sexual advances

 

If a housing resident feels that he/she has been the victim of sexual harassment at TSTC, the student should immediately report the incident to any of the following college officials:

 

  • Housing Supervisor located at the Housing Office in the Housing Complex (956.364.4236)

 

  • Title IX Coordinator (located at the Student Services Center, Support Services Office Room 216 or at 956.364.4520).

 

  • Vice President for Student Development (located in the Student Services Center Room 208 or at 956.364.4300).

 

  • College Police (located in the Auxiliary Building or at 956.364.4220)

 

  • TSTC Harlingen Human Resources Office (located at the Service Support Center or at 956.364.4041)
