When Tony Pena returned from the U.S. Navy in 2010, he was certain of one thing.
“I knew I was going to go to college,” Pena said. “Being in the military, my tuition was going to be paid for so the next step was going to school, earn my degree and star a career.”
Pena graduated from Los Fresnos High School in 2006 and immediately joined the Navy.
A couple of years ago, Pena decided to enroll at Texas State Technical College and pursue and Associates Degree from the Digital Media Design technology Program. Pena will graduate next month and continue to pursue his Bachelor’s Degree.
Pena is also currently taking an Advanced Photography class at the University of Texas-Brownsville. And a few weeks ago, Pena unknowingly entered an art contest and won in the 2D category.
“I thought I was just submitting my photograph to be displayed,” Pena said. “Then a friend let me know that I had won. I was really excited when I found out.”
The photo was of a ceremony held in honor of surfer Dan Deagle, who recently passed away. The ceremony was held at South Padre Island and captured a group of surfers jumping into the water.
“My friend called me and suggested that I go shoot it,” Pena said. “So I grabbed my camera and it was great. Afterward we all went to Boca Chica Beach and did some more surfing. It was a great experience. It was a celebration of his life.”
Pena dedicated the photograph and the win to Deagle’s family.
He said the experience reminded him why he loves photography and digital media.
“For now I’m going to keep going to school,” Pena said. “Eventually I plant to make a career out of something that I really love doing.”
