Staff Senate Represents Employees

Texas State Technical College accountant and Staff Senate President Viola Vela is working toward making the general staff’s advocacy group a more prominent fixture on campus.
In recent years, the Staff Senate hasn’t been as active but Vela hopes that by reaching out to the campus, the staff will recognize the senate and use it to their advantage.
The newly elected Staff Senate officers include Vela, Vice President Guadalupe Rivas, Secretary Mary Castanon, Treasurer Alicia Frias, Parliamentarian Janet Leal and members Arnold Galvan, Toni Zuniga and Arnold Garza. All officers and members are elected by the general staff.
“We’re the voice of the general staff here at TSTC,” said Vela, who also serves as a school board member for the Lyford School District. “We’re the liaisons between the staff and the (college) president. Any concerns or suggestions that staff might have, they can come to us and we go straight to the president.”
Vela has served on the Staff Senate for the past 10 years and is hoping that under the current Staff Senate Board and with the help of the TSTC community, more general staff will be aware that the group is there to represent them when needed.
“We want to involve the staff more,” Vela said. “We’ve asked the President’s Council to help and they’ve done a great job of helping us spread the word. They’re very supportive.”
The monthly meetings have grown from five people to nearly 40 and Vela is hopeful that these meetings will continue growing over the next few months.
“It’s a start,” Vela said. “We really got going close to January so we’re doing good right now. We just need to keep the staff informed and involved and we’ll get to where we want to be.”
