TSTC Opens Veterans Center
Tuesday, July 16, 2013
Texas State Technical College opened the new Veterans Center in the Student Center on Monday and no one was more excited than the center’s Director Steven Guevara.
The Veteran’s Center will serve as a centralized point of contact to assist prospective and current veterans, veteran’s dependents and active duty military students with navigating through college resources to ensure a successful college experience. The center is located in Room 138 across from the Nurse’s office.
“We’re all really excited about this,” said Guevara, a La Feria native and veteran of the United States Army. “This is going to be a place where veterans can meet and hang out with other veterans. They can come in here and get information or help applying for financial aid, admissions or their G.I. Bills. They can request information and we’ll be able to refer them to the right departments internally or externally.”
Guevara and his staff will serve as advocates for student veterans and act as liaisons between the student and other college offices, community resources and Veteran Affairs. Veterans and dependents are encouraged to submit the required documents for GI Bill and Hazlewood benefits directly to the Veterans Center.
Johann Martinez was recently hired to serve as the center’s Veteran’s Program Officer. Martinez, a Harlingen native and veteran of the United States Navy, will be the certifying officer and most student veterans will likely deal with Martinez at some point.
Guevara said Veterans are encouraged to stop by the Veterans Center to meet our staff and learn more about the services being offered.
Some of the services provided by the center include: application support (FAFSA, Admissions, Hazlewood and GI Bill), WebAdvisor training, college policies and procedures support, Work-Study and job information and referral, veteran benefits information and assistance, coordinate referrals for veterans and their dependents, printing and faxing support for veterans and their dependents, assistance with scholarship searches and application process, support services referral for counseling and special programs, tutoring support and referral, computer lab access and support, academic advisement and college credit evaluation support
