Freshmen Learn About Campus Resources

Students filed through the doors of the Texas State Technical College Fieldhouse in large numbers to learn more about the campus.
TSTC implemented a new course, TSTC 1101, into every new student's degree plan starting this semester. All incoming freshmen or any student with less than 24 credit hours is required to enroll in the course.
The foundation for success course is designed to teach the essentials of student learning at TSTC. And the TSTC 1101 Resource Fair held at the Fieldhouse throughout the week was one way of making the students aware of what the campus has to offer.
"The main thing is getting them to know what resources they have on campus," said General Studies Department Chair and TSTC 1101 instructor Toni Saldivar. "The focus is the students and what we can do to make their time here a success."
The fair had representatives from Student Life, Intramurals, Student Success, the Advisement Center, Financial Aid, Admissions and campus police.
"We gave them an assignment and asked them to come back to class and explain which three sources on campus might be most beneficial to them," Saldivar said.
A couple of weeks ago, students were given an assignment that required them to go out and learn about TSTC by attending Welcome Week activities. Students were asked to attend one day and choose three tables (club, program, and department) to interview.
"We're just trying to get them to go out and around campus," Saldivar said. "We're trying to make them aware and get them involved in the different clubs, programs and departments. I had two students come back and mention that they enjoyed it and joined one or two clubs."
