TSTC Hosts Welness Expo

Sunday, September 21, 2014
By Eladio Jaimez

Local businesses in the health, fitness, nutrition and beauty industries filled the Student Quad and the VIP Room in the cafeteria on Wednesday as the Third Annual Viva La Vida Wellness Expo gave the TSTC community an opportunity to pursue a healthier lifestyle.

TSTC Nurse and Expo Coordinator Erika Carriaga called the Expo a complete success and is looking forward to planning next year's event already.

This was the first time the Expo took pace indoors and outdoors and there were an all-time high of 45 vendors on hand promoting everything from gyms, organ donation and beauty products.

"I was happy to see so many students, faculty and staff stopping by and increasing their health awareness," Carriaga said. "We expanded the Expo this year, so that's a big positive for us. And we were able to utilize the newly renovated VIP Room, so that was exciting too."

Carriaga was able to promote a couple of upcoming events too through the Expo.

The Wellness and Sports Center will team up with Carriaga and host the Viva Los Super Heroes Two-Mile Run/Walk this morning on the TSTC Campus.

The run/walk is open to all TSTC personnel and their families and is free of charge. Participants are encouraged to dress up in their favorite super hero costumes.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the race is scheduled to get under way at 8 a.m.

"We were able to get some good exposure for our Super Hero run/walk," Carriaga said. "And we covered so many different components of the health and wellness spectrum that I think we had something for everyone out here."

Clubs and programs from TSTC also got involved including the Student Government, Career Services, Veteran Student Alliance Club, the Fire Academy and the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Club.

"Ultimately we're just trying to promote wellness on our campus and to our students," Carriaga said. "Between the Expo and the walk/run, I think we're doing our part."
