Military FriendlyFor the third straight year, Texas State Technical College has been named a Military Friendly School by Victory Media for the year 2014.

The distinction ranks TSTC in the top 15 percent of schools nationwide, according to a press release by Victory Media.

Victory Media is a global medium that covers the military community of troops, veterans and their family members with content targeted to unique needs at critical military life stages.

TSTC opened the doors to the Veterans Center on campus in July. The Veteran’s Center serves as a centralized point of contact to assist prospective and current veterans, veterans’ dependents and active duty military students through college resources to ensure a successful college experience.

Harlingen native and 12-year U.S. Navy veteran Frank Nayavich said the honor is well deserved by TSTC.

“TSTC is here to help us out and that’s what veterans do for one another, they help out,” Nayavich said. “This center is great. We come in here and help each other out.”

Executive Vice President for Financial and Administrative Services Teri Zamora said earning the distinction of being a Military Friendly School shows the commitment by TSTC to help students who’ve served the country.

“Being included in the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools is the result of numerous initiatives, including the opening our new Veterans Center,” Zamora said. “ Veterans are a growing and dynamic part of our student population, and we appreciate the opportunity to help them succeed in various technical and academic programs, and also the opportunity to help them transition into the workforce.

Veterans Center director Steven Guevara said Veterans are encouraged to stop by the Veterans Center to meet our staff and learn more about the services being offered.

Some of the services provided by the center include: application support (FAFSA, Admissions, Hazlewood and GI Bill), WebAdvisor training, college policies and procedures support, work-study and job information and referral, veteran benefits information and assistance, coordination of referrals for veterans and their dependents, printing and faxing support for veterans and their dependents, assistance with scholarship searches and application process, support services referral for counseling and special programs, tutoring support and referral, computer lab access and support, academic advisement and college credit evaluation support.

“This is going to be a place where veterans can meet and hang out with other veterans,” Guevara said. “They can come in here and get information or help applying for financial aid, admissions or their G.I. Bills. They can request information and we’ll be able to refer them to the right departments internally or externally.”
