Area Counselors Get Updated on Campus Information
Saturday, October 19, 2013
For the past six years, counselors from school districts across the Valley and South Texas have congregated at Texas State Technical College for one day in September to learn more about the growing college's mission and commitment to industry and education.
Recently more than 80 counselors representing 17 school districts from Brownsville to Zapata spent a day at TSTC to learn the latest about the college.
"We updated them on everything we're doing here from admissions to financial aid," Director of Recruiting Dora Colvin said.
Colvin said counselors played a vital role in helping TSTC's enrollment see a hike this semester.
In the past few years, TSTC has taken a more active role in dual enrollment and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education through partnerships with local school districts.
When the final fall numbers were in, TSTC's enrollment increased 5.7 percent from last year with a total of 5,951 students enrolled. Last year enrollment was 5,630 students. Harlingen's enrollment was the highest in the TSTC System this semester.
"Our relationship with these counselors is very important," Colvin said. "They come here once a year to learn about our college and get any updated information we have and they go back and educate their students about us. They meet with the high school seniors and relay our information to them."
Almost every technical program division experienced an increase in enrollment with the biggest increase coming in the Engineering Division with a 25 percent increase
"Counselors leave here with a lot of information about the college," Colvin said. "it's a win-win situation. These partnerships benefit everyone and this collaboration between TSTC and the counselors will continue."
The counselors are treated to a continental breakfast and lunch prepared by the culinary arts students. Every year there's a keynote speaker and the group also takes a tour of the campus.
