Professional Development

One of the primary purposes of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) is to be a resource for faculty to learn new concepts for learning and professional development. Throughout the semester the CETL hosts a variety of professional development sessions, and courses (face to face and/or online).

Annual Faculty Development Plan 2013-2014

  The purpose of TSTC’s annual faculty development plan is to help faculty improve their professional growth and development as an instructor. The plan outlines the overall process, specific outcomes to achieve, and goals for the 2013-2014 year. The plan is provided using this link:  Annual Faculty Development Plan

Instructor Level Certification (ILC) Course 

The ILC is a competency/performance-based full-semester course for faculty and teaching lab assistants new to TSTC Harlingen.  The purpose of the course is to provide:

  • Information on policies, procedures, organization, and support services unique to TSTC Harlingen
  • Information and resources, on teaching and learining styles, pedagogy, the use of instructional technology, class management, and assessment techniques
  • An avenue for new instructors and lab assistants to demonstrate teaching competencies necessary to be successful

Department Chair (DC) Course

Department chairs play a key role at TSTC. The purpose of this course is to provide training and information to develop new department chairs, assistant department chairs, or refresh current department chairs to their roles and responsibilities. This course is delivered as a “hybrid” course with F2F meetings and delivering of content via the college’s LMS.

Copyright Course

This is a self-paced course which uses the college's LMS (Moodle) to provide faculty with the foundation for copyright law, fair use, and copyright/licensing issues involved in using a wide variety of materials protected by copyright. Webinars and Other Professional Development Activities 

The CETL provides professional development activities to all faculty and staff.  Webinars, seminars, and hands-on sessions are provided on a variety of topics including teaching and learning styles, classroom management and incorporating technology in the classroom.  The CETL periodically updates its offering to provide faculty with current resources to assist them in their continued professional development.
