January 5, 2015

Greetings from TSTC - Harlingen!

By mid-March of 2015, the Department of Registered Nursing Program willl open the application process for LVN - RN Transition Class 2015-2016 which will start in the Fall semester 2015. The application forms will be distributed by the Allied Health Division Secretary and the Department Chair. It can be downloaded online through TSTC website once posted or available. See the "The Application Process" tab which will be updated soon.  It will be closed on May 29, 2015 (Friday) at 5pm.

No late application forms or packets will be accepted.

(Disclaimer: Some required and much-needed changes to the application process and requirements will be instituted anytime between now and the last day of application period. All interested applicants must check this webpage for updates every so often. Thank you.)

Information sessions are being held biweekly in the Allied Health Building "U" in Room 204. The time varies from 4-7pm. The schedule will be posted in this webpage once available.  All LVN students hoping to enroll in the RN program next year could attend an information session but not a requirement to pick up an application form. See Information Session tab for more info.

For clarification, this “full” program of study is being offered to current LVN licensees only. It will lead to an Associates of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Nursing. While it is possible for "seasoned/ experienced" LVNs to be admitted into the program, please keep in mind all course prerequisites, academic and major sciences, must be taken prior to submitting the application form, and passed them with minimum grades of "C" to be considered for acceptance into the program. Working an outside job of more than 12 hours a week is heavily discouraged while in the program. Applicants must pass the criminal background and drug screen test prior to attending clinicals. Students without blue cards and other proofs of cleared criminal background check (CBC) from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) will not be allowed to register for fall semester or be dropped from the class roster.

Again, all applicants must be licensed LVNs by the fall entrance date to enter the LVN - RN Transition program at TSTC Harlingen. The successful RN graduate will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX- RN exam to obtain licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Texas Board of Nursing the following summer.

The program includes at least two (2) semesters of academic “core” and “prerequisite” courses and three (3) semesters of LVN-RN Transition-related courses with clinicals. The ratio of classroom to clinical is approximately 3 to 1 with about 70% of the total hours spent in clinical-related learning experiences. The entire program requires 60 credits, taking at least three years (counting the year in the vocational nursing program) to complete from start to finish.

The list of prerequisite courses are posted on the left side of this page under AAS Degree tab. The current information posted is under review awaiting approval of the new set of prerequisite courses listed in the Program Requirements tab.

Taking the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certificate level 1 and subsequently the Vocational Nursing (LVN) certificate level 2 prior to applying to the RN program thereafter is strongly recommended but not required. This is to strengthen nursing skills and cognitive nursing knowledge base prior to joining the RN program.

Because we want you to succeed and graduate, it’s in your interest (and ours too) to make sure that you know the challenges you will be facing once you become a part of the program. Attending an information session prior to application will alleviate some feelings of uncertainties you might have.

We are looking forward to another exciting year for upcoming LV-RN Transition Class 2015-2016!
