Question 1: What is LPN- STEP Test?
It is a proctored assessment test designed for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) who are interested in applying to the Registered Nursing (RN) Program of TSTC-Harlingen. It is developed by expert nurse educators and clinicians to determine how much knowledge a LPN has accumulated from graduation up to this day and what knowledge is needed in pursuing a RN degree. *** The scores for this particular test are one of the major factors in determining the applicant’s admissibility into the program and possible success once accepted. Thus, it is advisable to take it seriously with proper content reviews and preparation.
This online examination covers areas of nursing such as Adult Medical Surgical, Fundamentals of Nursing, Client Management, Maternal Newborn, Nursing Care of Children, Nutrition, and Pharmacology.
You are only allowed to take it once per application period.
The exam runs between 3- 4 hours. A maximum of 20 test takers are allowed per testing date. The testing dates are as follows:
*** Registering and scheduling for this test at the last minute or days prior deadline may not be possible. Taking it early on is advisable. Additional testing dates may NOT added unless absolutely necesssary.
Question 2: Where and how is it being administered?
Applicants must take exam at the TSTC Harlingen Student Services Building, Room 312A. For current TSTC students, you will have to access the TSTC Workshop Registration webpage: https://secure.harlingen.tstc.edu/Workshop/Login.aspx to schedule an exam. For non-TSTC applicants, please call the testing center directly at 956-364-4308 to schedule and secure seat availability. After the exam, you will be given a copy of the score to be included in the submission of your application packet. Photo ID card and credit or debit card are required on the day of testing.
Question 3: How much is it going to cost me?
Applicants must pay a proctoring fee of $15 at the Cashier’s window and $18 to be paid directly to www.ATItesting.com with a credit or debit card on the day of testing. The total fee for taking the exam is $33.
Question 4: What can I do to prepare? Are there any review materials available?
The ATI’s LPN-STEP Online Practice Assessment (click on it) can be purchased online through its website. Follow the instructions given to you. This is NOT mandatory but recommended. After taking the exam, feedback for improvement will be sent to you. It will not affect the scores of the actual examination to be taken here in campus. A sensible review of course materials in the LVN Program could give you great examination results.
