Former Black Hawk Pilot Speaks at TSTC Marshall
Elizabeth McCormick, a former Blackhawk helicopter pilot, spoke at TSTC Marshall in celebration of Veteran’s Day. She told students, faculty and staff of the perseverance needed to accomplish her goal and urged the audience to never give up.
“I wanted to be a helicopter pilot,” she said. “I didn’t know getting to be one was as hard as it was.”
Once McCormick made it to flight school, she faced more challenges from an instructor who insisted that women had no place flying. Her grades suffered until a substitute instructor helped her for one week.
“The next week was final exams,” McCormick said. “I knew just enough to pass.” Afterwards McCormick developed in her career as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot under numerous missions. In 2011 she was given the 2011 Congressional Veteran Commendation.
TSTC President Randy Wooten, himself an Air Force veteran, said the college worked to help veterans.
“One of the things we’re proud of at TSTC is that we’re identified as a military and veteran-friendly school,” said President Wooten. “If you’re a veteran, you’re at home here at TSTC.”
Currently more than 10 percent of TSTC’s faculty and staff served in addition to 38 student veterans.
