We know that at Texas State Technical College we offer the best technical programs to power the state of Texas. But behind every great program is an advisory board made of industry leaders to keep us on track. Advisory boards help us stay current and relevant with technical course content for our programs. They advise in a variety of areas for programs including equipment, techniques and software to help meet course objectives.
Additionally, advisory board members help us with donations, placement and recruiting efforts. Michael Bowers, Director of Engineering Technologies in Waco, says, “The recruiting efforts of most boards are of invaluable service to the programs. Being leaders within their communities as well as their fields allows them to open doors for recruiting and advertising opportunities that would not otherwise be available.”
Bowers says that in the past the Electrical Power and Controls program received over $500,000 in new electrical test equipment through the help of several advisory board members. They introduced Bowers to the manufacturer during a trade show.
Our advisory boards are made mostly of members who have been invited to join because of their expertise in their respective fields or through referrals by other board members. They are mandated to meet at least once a year, many even meeting twice.
As we have gone through single accreditation and curriculum alignment, we have opportunities to build statewide boards with programs offered at multiple locations. State boards will be made of three to four members from each of the existing boards. If a program is only offered at one location there will be no change.
Our advisory boards have an important role with TSTC: to ensure we produce competent technicians for the workforce. And that is advice well-taken.
