Texas State Technical College Medical Assistant Requirements

Program Requirements

  • Interview with program advisor
  • Attend program information session
  • Complete the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) test with the following scores; Math 350, Reading 351, Writing 363 and Essay score of 4 or better to complete both sections.
  • Complete program application
  • Criminal background check (at least two months prior to starting the program)
  • Copy of immunization record showing proof of the following; Hep B (Series 1,2 & 3), Hep A (Series 1 & 2), MMR (Series 1 & 2), Tdap (one every 10 years), Varicella, PPD (TB skin test, every 6 months, if positive chest x-ray every 2 years), MCV4 (18-30 years of age) 
  • Physical Examination (Annually)
  • Random Drug screening
  • CPR certification (prior to starting the program)
  • Insurances. These can be obtained during the first two weeks of class. For more information download the MEA Program Checklist.
  • Attend a mandatory program orientation before program starts (If admission is approved by program chair)

Application Process

  • Texas State Technical College registration and application
  • New Student Orientation Class (NSO) – Registration at Admissions
  • Application For Financial Aid
  • TSI test (if needed)
  • Meet with Program Advisor
  • Medical Assistant Application
  • A criminal back-ground check is needed, to register go to and make an appointment in any of the locations in the RGV. Call 1-888-467-2080 for any questions.

  • A copy of your Immunization Record * needed before you can register into program*
    • Hepatitis B series (1, 2, 3 )
    • Hepatitis A series (1, 2 )
    • MMR series ( 1, 2 )
    • Tdap One Dose ( 1 every 10 Year)
    • PPD (TB Skin Test) One every Six Months
      If positive (chest x-ray every 2 years)
      *PPD to be done once classes start*
    • MCV4 (18 to 30 years of age only)
  • Physical Exam – One annually
  • Drug screening (random) $20
  • CPR Certification--- This certification needs to be obtained through the American Heart Association. You may get this on your own or inquire about making an appointment. ($45)
  • Insurances (these can be obtained through TSTC)
    • IN1 Accidental Insurance-$16. Needs to be obtained every semester (Please provide us with copy of your personal health insurance)
    • 2INS Needle Stick- $21. Needs to be obtained every semester
    • Malpractice Liability Insurance- $14.50 (you purchase this insurance once a year)
  • Uniform fitting
