Medical Information Specialist/Transcriptionist

Thank you for your interest in the Medical Information Specialist/Transcriptionist program at Texas State Technical College Harlingen. As a student at TSTC Harlingen, you will be awarded endless opportunities to fulfill your educational goals. TSTC students enjoy a hands-on learning environment that promotes continued educational growth.

TSTC is constantly evolving and providing programs to compete with the specialized fields of the working world. TSTC Harlingen offers Certificates of Completion in Medical Information Specialist/Transcriptionist. Graduates of the program can have career opportunities that offer a sense of responsibility, personal growth, achievement and financial reward.

Medical specialists are individuals who work in clerical and billing areas of medical facilities, while medical transcriptionists are medical language specialists who interpret and transcribe reports dictated by physicians and other health care professionals. These reports are the communication tools for documenting health care and facilitating health care delivery. This is the ideal profession for individuals who are interested in working in the medical field yet do not want to work directly in patient care.

Graduates of this program are prepared to work in a variety of facilities, such as hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, or even at home. These graduates are trained for various positions including, but not limited to, the following: assembly clerk, analysis clerk, coder, file clerk, release of information clerk, processing specialist, unit secretary, medical receptionist, billing specialist, appointments scheduler, medical transcriptionist assistant, and medical transcriptionist. Skills are practiced in health care facilities during one directed practice course.

Career opportunities within the program vary between options and I encourage you to visit the program and find out which choice is right for you. TSTC can provide you with the knowledge to achieve your goals. For more information or to schedule a tour, I encourage you to contact the Medical Information Specialist/Transcriptionist program at 956.364.4768 or the TSTC College Information Office at 956.364.4117.

I look forward to meeting you soon.
