Surgical Technology

Thank you for your interest in the Surgical Technology program at Texas State Technical College Harlingen. As a student at TSTC Harlingen, you will be awarded endless opportunities to fulfill your educational goals. TSTC students enjoy a hands-on learning environment that promotes continued educational growth.

TSTC is constantly evolving and providing programs to compete with the specialized fields of the working world. TSTC Harlingen offers Associate of Applied Science Degrees in Surgical Technology. Graduates of the program can have career opportunities that offer a sense of responsibility, personal growth, achievement and financial reward.

Surgical technologists, also called operating room technologists, are a vital part of the surgical team and assist in operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses or other surgical personnel. TSTC’s Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

TSTC’s Surgical Technology program provides classroom education and supervised clinical experience. Students take courses in english, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, humanities, medical terminology, speech, college algebra and psychology. Other studies cover the care and safety of patients during surgery, aseptic techniques and surgical procedures. Students also learn to sterilize instruments; prevent and control infection; and handle special drugs, solutions, supplies and equipment.

Most graduates are employed by hospitals, mainly in operating and delivery rooms.  Others are employed in clinics, surgical centers, and in the office of physicians and dentists who perform outpatient surgery.  A few, known as private scrubs, are employed directly by surgeons.

Career opportunities within the program vary between options and I encourage you to visit the program and find out which choice is right for you. TSTC can provide you with the knowledge to achieve your goals.
