The chemical laboratory technician plays an integral role in the testing, research and development of thousands of products ... from plastics to electrical power, from food to pharmaceuticals. Advances in laboratory instrumentation and procedures continue to expand the chemical technician's role in virtually every industry.

The combination of these and additional factors have resulted in excellent career opportunities for skilled, knowledgeable chemical technicians.

Dozens of industries need the vital skills of chemical technicians. You'll find them at the heart of laboratories in petrochemical plants, environmental operations, water purification facilities, cosmetics manufacturers and many more.

Chemical technicians work with chemists and engineers to set up, operate and maintain lab instruments, monitor experiments, calculate and document results using the principles and theories of science and chemistry to help invent and improve products and processes.

As a student at TSTC, you will study all aspects of this “chemically balanced” field, practicing the skills and processes you will actually use on the job. TSTC’s Chemical-Environmental program gives you a competitive advantage by participating real work situations like in beach cleanups, oil spill response teams, oiled bird rescue, and river and ship channel water sampling.

And that’s good for you, because when hiring time is in view, nothing beats experience!

What You’ll Do

  • Train on a variety of analytical instruments and processes such as spectrophotometers, gas chromatographers, distillation apparatus, total organic analysis, color analysis, and infrared spectroscopy.

  • Perform laboratory work in chemical and environmental analysis, environmental sampling, elementary chemical engineering, and quality assurance and control.

  • Tour industry facilities and conduct experiments outside the traditional classroom and laboratories.

  • 5 semesters of intensive training in lab settings utilizing equipment and processes used by industry professionals, along with the academics and support courses you need to succeed

Added Value

Students in the Chemical-Environmental program not only learn about chemical analysis and testing and environmental laws and regulations, they also apply them throughout the course, giving them real work experience.

In addition to collecting various testing samples from local areas, several students participated in a grant from the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission conducting continuous monitoring and sampling of the Arroyo Colorado. The students conducted the data collection while faculty evaluated the data for quality assurance and control compliance and submitted reports to the granting agency.

This, combined with internships and co-ops, gives them a distinct advantage over typical college graduates.

This program has also received the Texas General Land Office State OSPRA Award twice in two years, making TSTC the only entity to ever receive the award two times.

Small Class Size

At TSTC, our classes average 20 students per class to ensure instructors have plenty of time to work with each student.  

Hands-on Learning

Compared to other colleges, TSTC students spend a lot less time in the classroom and much more time in work settings, operating the instruments they will use in their respective fields. Students spend more than 60 percent of their time learning by doing the actual work they will do upon graduating from college. It’s just one of the many ways TSTC ensures you get the strong training you need to succeed in your career choice.

Students in the Chemical-Environmental program participate in tours of industry, wastewater plants, drinking water plants, and landfills. They also work in the “field” to collect water, soil, sediment, air, and fish samples for testing back at the lab.
