TSTC Advantage

Students in Texas State Technical College’s Golf Course & Landscape Management program learn all aspects of turfgrass maintenance and landscaping. The laboratory-intensive program includes extensive instruction in turfgrass management, golf course and landscape maintenance, landscape installation and plant knowledge.   And TSTC students can learn on an actual working golf course owned by the college!

So while the field is part science, part horticulture, and part environmental — the program is anything but routine.

What you’ll do!

  • Learn in the college’s industry-standard labs, its organic green, bunker, greenhouses, native plant beds and turf plots.

  • Have the opportunity to work and learn on the college-owned, fully-operational golf course.

  • Master software programs utilized in the field including CAD and Rain CAD.

  • Gain knowledge in the safe use of chemicals and fertilizers commonly applied to treat the landscape.

TSTC’s star power prep

  • 5 semesters of intensive training utilizing equipment and software found in the turf grass industry

  • Faculty who have years of experience in the field

  • A well-rounded curriculum guided by an industry advisory committee

  • Opportunity to learn and work on the college-owned golf course

  • Learn the knowledge needed to test for the Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator Noncommercial License.

  • Internships available in various areas across the state

Faculty

TSTC’s Golf Course & Landscape Management faculty comes to the college with years of professional experience in the field.

The golf course faculty are active members of professional organizations including the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), Texas Nursery & Landscape Association (TNLA), Texas Turfgrass Association (TTA) and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

Small class size

At TSTC, our Golf Course and Landscape Management classes average 20 students per class so instructors have plenty of time to work with each student.

Hands-on learning

Compared to other colleges, TSTC students spend a lot less time in the classroom and much more time in work settings, operating the instruments they will use in their respective fields. Students spend more than 60 percent of their time learning by performing the actual work they will undertake upon graduation. It’s just one of the many ways TSTC ensures you get the strong training you need to succeed in your career choice.

Advisory Committee

With an advisory committee consisting of current industry professionals, who meet at least annually to direct the program’s curriculum, TSTC ensures its programs match industry needs.  This partnership makes it easier for TSTC graduates to be work ready and obtain jobs when hiring time arrives. Many major companies understand the important part they play by serving on a TSTC advisory committee.
