Is your idea of fun working on cars or engines or perhaps just fixing things? Check out the Automotive Technology Program at TSTC West Texas where you'll learn all about automotive systems and how to repair and maintain them -- you learn the right way, the safe way, to work on cars and how to make it your career. The Automotive Technology Program is certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), and that means that employers know that TSTC West Texas graduates have been trained to the highest standards in automotive repair and maintenance.

At TSTC West Texas, you'll train in a new state-of-the art-equipped facility with drive-in labs, eight lifts, the latest alignment equipment, a dynamometer to simulate road conditions, the latest computerized diagnostic equipment, and safety facilities. Our instructors have worked in the automotive industry and they stay up-to-date with changes in industry technology. You won't miss out on computer training either. Automotive technology integrates computerized systems with mechanical systems so you'll learn both. You'll learn how to troubleshoot problems and design and implement solutions. Your training will be hands-on with lots of opportunity for practice in repairing automotive systems.

Depending on whether you pursue a certificate or an associate's degree, you'll take courses like:

  • Electrical Systems
  • Engine Repair
  • Brake Systems
  • Heating and Air Conditioning
  • Drive Train and Axles
  • Engine Performance Analysis
  • Suspension and Steering

When you graduate, you can choose among careers such as:

  • Automotive Service Technician
  • Service Writer
  • Small Engine Mechanic

Demand for automotive technicians is exceptionally high and employment is expected to increase, partially because of the number of technicians who are retiring and must be replaced. Employers in this growing field include:

  • Automotive Dealerships
  • Parts stores
  • Fleet Accounts
  • Independent Shops
  • Other businesses needing mechanical technicians
