Have you noticed how eBay’s inventory is instantly updated after a purchase? Dynamic web sites, such as eBay, use programming languages to communicate with, and update, databases in order to provide timely and accurate information to shoppers.

Our new Computer Science Technology degree is designed to provide the knowledge and skill needed to develop programming solutions that allow dynamic web pages to interact with databases, as well as general programming solutions. The demand for this skill continues to increase as the uses of the Internet and mobile technology create demand for applications and software systems.

The CST program provides hands-on experience with programming languages (C++, Visual Basic, PHP, ASP, and Java) database systems (Access, Oracle, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server) and the design and implementation of web sites.

This will help prepare you for jobs such as

  • Computer Programmer

  • Software Developer

  • Applications Developer

  • Web Programmer

  • Database Programmer

  • Internet Programmer

  • Computer Software Engineers

Programmers write new programs, as well as update, repair, modify, and expand existing programs. The programmer codes these instructions in any of a number of programming languages, depending on the need. Among the most common languages are C++, Java and Visual Basic.

Median annual wages of wage-and-salary computer programmers were $69,620 in May 2008. Jobs are more plentiful and have higher salary ranges in metropolis areas, however a number of graduates have placed in the Abilene area with an average starting salary of approximately $32,000.

Programmers and Computer Software Engineers must have strong problem-solving and analytical skills. They should be able to communicate effectively with others, multi-task, and be able to concentrate and pay close attention to detail.
