Welder overcame injury and then surgery
Career changes sometimes occur by chance. Glen Ubernosky, an auto mechanic for 30 years, furthered his education in Welding Technology after he injured his back. Then, he recuperated from triple bypass heart surgery to receive a college diploma.
Kiewit Offshore Services Ltd. in Ingleside, Texas, a subsidiary of Omaha-based Kiewit Corp., hired him as a welding engineer. He helped decide the types of welding to perform on projects and he dealt with problem-solving issues. The company manufactures and repairs offshore oil and gas platforms and produces large structural steel components.
Aid through the Texas Department of Assistive & Rehabilitative Services allowed him to enroll at TSTC. Heart surgery during the Christmas-New Year holiday break in 2005 did not alter his goal.
Ubernosky served as the Welding Club president and became the leader of the Welding Technology team for SkillsUSA competition. “I have a lot of pride in that department,” he said, “and take pride in being a TSTC graduate.”
