What the Future Holds

A career as a health information technician professional is as rewarding as it is gratifying. As health care advances, this profession will produce workers with the necessary skills required to successfully navigate the changes in the management of patient data. The Health Information career path encompasses a wide range of occupations with various job functions including, but not limited to, health records management, quality assurance, risk management, medical coding, data analysis and reporting.

Graduates of this program are prepared to work in a variety of facilities such as hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, managed care organizations, long-term care facilities, behavioral health facilities, ambulatory care facilities and rehabilitation centers. They are trained in numerous areas such as medical coding, utilization management, medical statistics, release of information, health record analysis, quality assurance abstracting and health record consulting.

Employment of health information technicians is expected to grow much faster than average in the coming years. Parallel to the advancement in medical tests, treatments and procedures will be the increasing scrutiny of these new processes by third-party payers, regulators, courts and consumers. When you couple this scrutiny with the aging of the baby-boomer generation, the outlook for qualified health information technicians is very positive.

Graduates of the TSTC West Texas Health Information Technology program have multiple avenues for entering the job market. Average starting salary for entry-level positions depends on the area of specialization, with coders earning at the higher end of the scale. Starting salaries can range from $21,000 to $50,000. Starting salaries increase for those individuals with Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credentials.
