Loan Exiting Counseling

On behalf of the Financial Aid Office, we wish you much success in your future endeavors! Before you leave us to begin your new future and career, there are steps you need to complete to clear campus. If you acquired student loans while you attended Texas State Technical College West Texas, federal regulations require that you complete Direct Loan Exit Counseling before you graduate (or drop below half-time attendance). Please allow approximately 25 minutes to complete this informative session.

Failure to complete the session may cause your academic records to be unavailable in the future since we cannot clear your record until this exit counseling session is completed and in your file. Please contact the Financial Aid Office after you have completed the session so that we may update your record to reflect completion of the exit session. We must have this confirmation to complete the exit process and clear you for graduation.

Keep in Mind

If you borrowed money to attend school, you can expect to begin paying it back 6 months after you leave. This is known as your grace period. It is a period that allows you to prepare for the repayment of your loan. It begins when you (1) stop attending, (2) graduate, (3) withdraw, (4) or drop below half-time attendance.

Avoid Default

A borrower will default if he/she fails to make 9 consecutive payments. If you find yourself unable to make your monthly payment, contact the Department of Education at 1-800-848-0979 or the organization servicing your loan immediately for payment options. If you do not know who you loan servicer(s) is/are, log on to www.nslds.ed.gov to view your loan history.

We want you to avoid some of the consequences of default, such as:

  • Being sued for the full amount of the loan.
  • Having your income tax refund garnished.
  • Having your wages withheld.
  • Becoming ineligible for additional federal financial aid (includes Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, and College Work-Study) if you ever decide to go back to school. To become eligible again, you will need to set up payment arrangements for the defaulted loan.
