Success for Our Students Office

Student Assistance Programs:

The Success for Our Students (SOS) Office provides various types of assistance designed to aid students in reaching their true potential at TSTC West Texas.

The 1998 Carl D. Perkins Act defines Special Populations as:

  • Individuals with disabilities
  • Individuals from economically disadvantaged families, including foster children.
  • Individuals preparing for non-traditional training/employment
  • Single parents, including single pregnant women
  • Displaced homemakers
  • Individuals with other barriers to educational achievement

These services are funded through a Carl D. Perkins grant that are contingent upon availability of funds and adherence to program policy.  Guidelines and benefits are subject to change.

Transportation Assistance:

Qualifications:

  • 2.0 GPA (or first time student)
  • Fulltime student (12 hours)
  • PELL Grant
  • Be in good standing with Financial Aid and Business Office
  • Drive 20 miles or more one way (not for internships)
  • Currently receiving other services, such as: CCPO, DARS, TRC, VA, Food Stamps, Social Security, etc

Qualified students are paid $25 a month for only the days that they drive to campus (excluding internships and clinicals).  Student must get their instructors to sign monthly vouchers indicating that they are attending class and are in good standing. There are limited funds. Students must reapply each semester. Guidelines and benefits are subject to change. Contact the SOS office for details.

Childcare Assistance:

Qualifications:

  • 2.0 GPA (or first time student)
  • Fulltime student (12 hours)
  • PELL Grant
  • Be in good standing with Financial Aid and Business Office
  • Currently receiving other services, such as: CCPO, DARS, TRC, VA, Food Stamps, Social Security, etc
  • Approved child care facility

Child care assistance is paid directly to the approved facility not the student. In most cases, assistance is $5 a day for 1 child, $6 for 2 children, etc. Funding is limited and students must reapply each semester. Guidelines and benefits are subject to change. Contact the SOS office for details.

Textbook Borrowing (Abilene and Sweetwater):

Textbooks are available to borrow at the beginning of each semester on a first come, first serve basis.  Students are required to bring them back at the end of the semester.  If they do not return their borrowed books, a HOLD will be placed on their account and they will not be able to register for classes, receive their diploma or get their transcripts.

Book loans:

Students who do not have funds immediately available to buy their books can apply for a book loan.  They will be able to purchase their books using this loan, but it will have to be paid back before next semester to be able to register for classes.

These services are funded through a Carl D. Perkins grant that are contingent upon availability of funds and adherence to program policy.  Guidelines and benefits are subject to change.
