Texas State Technical College (TSTC) Harlingen today is not the same technical college of yesterday. Community and workforce needs, economic challenges and global competition have dictated innovative changes in the way we educate students and in the way we do business.
Our main focus is still on helping students gain new job skills, upgrade existing skills or retrain for a new career altogether. But in today’s technology-driven world, our programs have become more diverse, more hands-on and more computer-intensive than ever. That’s why it’s imperative that we hire instructors who are experts in their fields, and that we stay connected to industry leaders and maintain an ongoing study and knowledge of hiring trends.
Today we’re also seeing more of our students focusing on academics in preparation for transfer to 4-year universities. In fact 1/3 of our students currently go on to get bachelor’s degrees after graduation from TSTC, many while working in high-paying technical careers.
To meet those needs, TSTC has strengthened and expanded its academic core, adding seven new associate of science degree programs. We’ve signed articulation agreements with partner universities to bring educational opportunities to our students seeking higher degrees. We’ve opened the University Center, in a unique collaboration with the city of Harlingen and the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation where eight partner universities, including University of Texas Brownsville, University of Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, Texas A&M Kingsville and University of Houston, to name a few, offer classes towards a combined total of 23 bachelor’s, 23 master’s and 1 doctoral program.
We’ve also added new programs to meet the needs of emerging technologies and industry demands, including programs in Wind Technology and Nursing (RN). Further, we’ve expanded our educational opportunities to the rural communities of Ingleside, Zapata and Hondo.
Our job placement rate consistently remains well over 95 percent, but our greatest achievement may be our graduation awards – up 40 percent from five years ago.
It’s a new day at TSTC. I urge you to navigate our website and learn about our many successes and opportunities, or come visit our campus in Harlingen. We are here to help you achieve your educational and career goals and, ultimately, help you find personal and professional fulfillment.
