Federal Student Loans
Borrowing to pay for your education is an important decision that only you and your family can make. An education is expensive, but it is also worth the investment of time, effort, and money. In addition to enriching an individual personally, there is significant research that shows that an education is likely to increase what an individual earns over a lifetime.
However, it is important to realize that any money you borrow will have to be paid back. A student loan is a financial obligation that won't go away until it is paid in full.
Texas State Technical College (TSTC) - Harlingen will begin processing loans under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program, also known as Direct Loans. All new TSTC student loan borrowers including transfer students borrowing for the first time at TSTC Harlingen must attend a loan session in person.
Time Limitation on Direct Subsidized Loan Eligibility for First-Time Borrowers on or after July 1,2013.
There is a limit on the maximum period of time (measured in academic years) that you can receive Direct Subsidized Loans. In general, you may not receive Direct Subsidized Loans for more than 150% of the published length of your program. This is called your "maximum eligibility period". You can usually find the published length of study in your school's catalog.
Your maximum eligibility period is based on the published length of your current program. This means that your maximum eligibility period can change if you change programs. Also, if you receive Direct Subsidzed Loans for one program and then change to another program, the Direct Subsidized Loans you received for the earlier program will generally count against your new maximum eligibility period. Please review the information about the 150% borrowing regulation at Federal Student Aid.
Please Note: The determination of the 150% limit on Direct Subsidized Loan eligibility is not the same as the financial aid standards of satisfactory academic progress maximum time frame of 150% for completion of a degree or certificate program. The financial aid standards of satisfactory academic progress maximum time frame is based on 150% of the program length as determined by total attempted credits.
Department of Education has placed TSTC Harlingen in an Unsubsidized Experiment, which will allow us to limit the amount of unsubsidized loan a student may receive.
