Mechatronics describes the automated systems that involve electronics, mechanics and computer Control. Mechatronics is an exciting interdisciplinary field that makes possible the generation of simpler, more economical, reliable and versatile commercial and industrial products and equipment.

Industrial applications are becoming increasingly multidisciplinary requiring engineers and technicians to develop skills in a variety of disciplines including mechanics, electronics, computer science, and automation. Robotics, Industrial Automation, & Electro-mechanical Systems to name a few are examples of mechatronic applications.

Many existing industries require Mechatronics skills and problem solving abilities. Mechatronics Technology courses combine various disciplines to teach future technicians a practical approach to developing solutions for engineering applications.

There is a high demand for bilingual engineers and technicians with Mechatronics knowledge and experience with companies in the Rio Grande Valley and surrounding regions including Laredo, Houston, San Antonio, and in industrial “Maquiladoras” on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border.

Mechatronics Technology teaches a number of skills including “practical” knowledge in the integration of electrical systems, fluid power, computer controls, PLCs, instrumentation, robotics, Quality Control and information technology.

The Mechatronics program will teach future Technicians to:

  1. Maintain Mechatronic Systems involving: (Hydraulic/ pneumatic, electro-mechanical and digital control systems)
  2. Assemble Mechatronic Systems involving: (Hydraulic/ pneumatic, electro-mechanical and digital control systems)
  3. Plan/Design Mechatronic Systems involving: (Hydraulic/ pneumatic, electro-mechanical and digital control systems)
  4. Assist Engineers with Mechatronic Systems involving: (Hydraulic/ pneumatic, electro-mechanical and digital control systems)

Mechatronics has identified and partnered with a number of well-known companies and Industries across the state of Texas as Advisory members that require the skill set that is obtained through completion of the Mechatronics Technology Program at TSTC Harlingen.

Associated Companies for Mechatronics Technicians:

  • Chevron
  • Oxy USA
  • American Electric Power
