(ABILENE, Texas) – Vocational Nursing students at Texas State Technical College use the Industry Job Fair as a networking opportunity.
During the fall and spring semesters, business recruiters from around the state set up tables to talk to students about job opportunities. The nursing students like to visit the health care booths, but make sure to stop at each table to at least say “Hello,” and grab some of the swag.
“The job fair is very diverse,” said Victoria Gotschall, a Vocational Nursing student in Sweetwater. “It is nice that there is always at least one table for each of the programs.”
During previous job fairs, it was not unusual to see students talking to representatives in the aviation field or even Coca Cola.
“The job fair is a good place to get your name out,” Gotschall said.
Erica Hernandez, a Vocational Nursing student in Breckenridge, had a different goal during the most recent job fair.
“My son is 18 and he is looking at different things to do in his life,” she said. “He is interested in diesel, so I got some information from those companies.”
Kianna Womack, also a student at the Breckenridge campus, said she was looking not only for herself, but her boyfriend.
“There are so many job opportunities for the students,” she said.
The nursing students were pleased that several health care recruiters were at the job fair.
“I am always hoping we could have more nursing opportunities,” Womack said. “I was glad to see Shannon (Medical Center) on campus.”
The nursing students left with several business cards, but Hernandez said something else will be remembered.
“We have a lot of note pads and pens,” she said.
