Sandrine Casimir stands behind a table promoting the Veteran Recruitment program

(ROSENBERG, Texas) – May is Military Appreciation Month, a fact that Sandrine Casimir is well aware of.

Casimir works as a veteran recruitment representative for Texas State Technical College’s Fort Bend County campus. She aims to help veterans and their families remove any barriers toward gaining education in their chosen technical fields.

As a spouse to a veteran who served in Iraq, she is very familiar with the military. She said her experience is what led her down her current career path.

“I’ve always worked with veterans,” Casimir said. “When this opportunity came about, I was like, ‘Oh, let me try because I have some knowledge from being a veteran’s spouse.’ It was a good thing in my eyes.”

TSTC welcomes veterans and active military personnel, no matter where they are in life. Casimir has worked with students from those fresh out of high school to more nontraditional ones who are looking to make a career change and utilize their military benefits.

While each workday looks a little bit different for her, Casimir prioritizes being available to help veterans.

“People will often just walk into my office needing help,” she said. “We do our best to help them alongside our other tasks like calling and getting everyone to complete an application and turn in independent documents, or just sending them emails of what is needed. It is a lot of following up.”

Her work has helped her gain a further appreciation and understanding of each veteran’s unique circumstances. Some of the most impactful moments for her come when she works with veterans who have disabilities.

“We will go to events that honor veterans, some of whom might have lost one or both legs and need to use a wheelchair,” Casimir said. “But you know, their mindset is still strong. I’m always in awe of them. You know that kind of mentality and mindset that makes it clear they still want to go to college and on with their lives. In that way, they are still walking, still running ahead.”
