(ROSENBERG, Texas) – It can be hard to choose a career without being informed about the types of jobs available.

Texas State Technical College partners with local employers in order to combat that challenge through employer spotlights. The spotlights consist of industry leaders and professionals talking with TSTC students about what life is like working in the field. It helps the students get a better grasp not only of specific job opportunities, but also on the state of the industry they want to work in.

The most recent employer spotlight at TSTC’s Fort Bend County campus saw Saber Power, an electrical power system services firm based in Houston, visit with students in the Electrical Lineworker and Management program.

Rodney Riddle, vice president of construction at Saber Power, shared what a career at the company looks like.

“We build and service just about everything from new power and transmission lines to new substations,” Riddle said. “We have three different apprenticeship programs, including lineworker, electrician and civil construction.”

While some companies that attend employer spotlights are simply trying to get their name out there, many, Saber Power included, are actively hiring. After the presentation students were encouraged to ask questions and submit their resumes.

Diego Ascencio, a third-semester student working toward his associate degree in the lineworker program, said he finds the spotlights to be helpful.

“I really like these (presentations) as they help me find different opportunities,” Ascencio said. “I look for good pay, an emphasis on safety, and if there are doors open for growth and promotion.”

TSTC offers Electrical Lineworker and Management at its Abilene, Fort Bend County, Harlingen, Marshall and Waco campuses. An Associate of Applied Science degree and a certificate of completion are available.
