(HARLINGEN, Texas) – When an organization builds a reputation as a “great place to work,” it is reflective of great team members — such as those at Texas State Technical College.
TSTC alumna Melissa Aleman is one of those outstanding team members.
“My employment began as a student worker in the TSTC Workforce Development (now Workforce Training) department,” Aleman said. “Before I graduated, I noticed a clerk typist II job vacancy in the human resources department. I applied because I had obtained the knowledge and skills required for the position.”
Aleman earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Automated Office Technology from TSTC in 1993.
After graduation she accepted the clerk typist job, and she has enjoyed steady career growth in TSTC’s human resources department ever since.
“The previous jobs in human resources that I held consisted of a clerk, representative, project manager, and others,” Aleman said. “Now my present job is a human resources business partner. I feel TSTC is a great place to work because of the culture of care they demonstrate to all employees. I love helping people, and that is why I have stayed in this department.”
Aleman said the human resources department strives for new ways to improve internal communications with TSTC employees across the state.
“TSTC has transitioned into a new system called Workday to engage employees,” she said. “A STAR program was also launched that recognizes employee achievements, birthdays and work anniversaries.”
She said her program instructors at TSTC were important to her success.
“Their knowledge helped shape my achievements,” she said.
Aleman added that TSTC is a great place to pursue an education.
“It’s a two-year institution of higher education with over 50 programs and degrees,” she said. “I am witness to how TSTC can launch you into a career of your dreams.”
Kelly Contella, TSTC Talent Management senior executive director, said Aleman brings a wealth of knowledge to the human resources team and is an asset to the college.
“Melissa has worked in many functional areas within human resources, including payroll processing, benefits, leaves, and talent management,” Contella said. “(Her) history with the college, belief in our mission, strong relationships and commitment to what we do allow her the framework, trust and knowledge to assist others in their success with the college.”
