(HUTTO, Texas) – More than 37,000 non-farm jobs were added to the Texas labor market in December 2024, according to the Texas Workforce Commission

Almost one-third of the new jobs were categorized as trade, transportation and utility. The category includes positions such as HVAC technician, plumber, electrician, and wind turbine technician, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Fred Lee, career advisor for Texas State Technical College’s East Williamson County and New Braunfels campuses, said his job is to help students get ready to apply and interview for those positions.

“I ask what they expect for their field and if they have a resume and are on LinkedIn,” Lee said. “I also help them go through online job searches to learn how to manage those systems.”

Hunter Henry, TSTC’s manager of Employer Relations for Central Texas, said the students have to be willing to do some work too.

“We are not a vending machine. This is not a “push button, receive job” situation,” Henry said. “We can’t interview for them, but we can help them prepare for the interview and set them up for success.”

Career Services helps the students prepare for their job hunts with mock interviews, and the Employer Relations team brings in companies that are interested in hiring TSTC students.

“We spend time looking for the best that industry has to offer and then work to facilitate getting those employers in front of students,” Henry said. “We even maintain an internal job board to connect students and alumni with employers seeking TSTC-affiliated staff.”

Lee said the job board is not an unmonitored system.

“Everything posted on that board goes through a review process by a human in the Career Services department before it is posted publicly,” Lee said. “The department makes sure job posts and resumes alike meet all of TSTC’s standards for pay and student success.”
