David Place is a TSTC alumnus and a current instructor in the Digital Media Design program

(HARLINGEN, Texas) – Texas State Technical College Digital Media Design instructor David Place understands the power of a well-crafted story.

Place, an alumnus of the Digital Imaging Technology program (now Digital Media Design) at TSTC, draws on his experience at two Rio Grande Valley newsrooms to help prepare current students to develop their own approach to storytelling.

“I held a variety of jobs, including an editorial graphic designer, page designer, reporter and an acting managing editor,” he said. “Attention to detail and meeting deadlines are essential skills for any new digital media professional in a publishing role.”

Place earned an Associate of Applied Science degree in Digital Imaging Technology in 2003. He later earned a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees.

The Harlingen native said he stays motivated by exploring new ways to connect with students.

“I’ve been working to bring industry professionals to speak with our students virtually,” he said. “When our students learn about each person’s successes and challenges, it helps them grow.”

Jose Ramos, who is also a graduate of the program, is now in his fifth year of teaching career and technical education at San Benito Consolidated Independent School District. He described his former instructor’s approach as engaging.

“(He) explained the reason behind certain film techniques, and emphasized the importance of visual storytelling,” he said. “I convey the same principles to my high school students.”

Michael Lewis, lead instructor of the program, said Place has influenced student development by fostering an engaging learning environment.

“David constructive feedback helps students improve both technically and professionally,” he said. “His mentorship builds their confidence and accountability as they prepare for careers in digital media.”

Place shared some advice for current and prospective students.

“You can develop valuable skills and gain extensive knowledge by dedicating your time and effort in this creative field,” he said.

TSTC’s online Digital Media Design program offers an Associate of Applied Science degree and multiple certificates of completion.
