TSTC event spotlights matching skills to jobs

(HARLINGEN, Texas) – Some Texas State Technical College Automotive Technology and Wind Energy Technology students recently learned how their skills could relate to jobs at Altec Inc. during an employer spotlight at TSTC’s Harlingen location.

Altec is a leading equipment and service provider for the electric utility, telecommunications, lights and signs, and contractor markets.

John Sherman, a manager of talent pipeline development at Altec, told the students about the company’s history, products and job opportunities.

“Eighty percent of our mechanics that work for us came from a diesel or automotive venue,” he said. “The other 20% came from a wind energy technology or aviation maintenance program.”

Rigoberto Mendez, of Lyford, is studying for a certificate of completion in Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair.

“What appealed to me is the company travels where work is needed — especially in the situation of a hurricane,” he said. “I want a better life, and I can accomplish that by applying for a job with their company.”

Elijio Sanchez, of San Benito, is studying for a certificate of completion in Wind Energy Technician. He said he is interested in working at Altec.

“I’ve taken a course in the (Wind Energy Technology) program where I learned about hydraulics, and Altec works with hydraulics,” he said.

Sherman said Altec can help with employee development.

“The company offers to pay for an employee’s college education if that individual has an interest in a management position,” he said.
