TSTC students learn about plethora of job opportunities at Industry Job Fair

(ABILENE, Texas) – Texas State Technical College students had one mission during the Industry Job Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the college’s Industrial Technology Center.

“The students came dressed to impress with their resumes in hand,” said Brittany Wilson, a TSTC Career Services representative in West Texas. “This has been a great opportunity for them to meet the important people who hire our graduates.”

Representing more than 60 businesses located throughout the state, the potential employers said the West Texas students presented themselves professionally.

“The students I was able to talk to are really sharp,” said Luis Loureiro, a project engineer with Dallas-based Endiprev USA. “We were looking to talk to more than the wind students because we have jobs available that TSTC’s engineering and manufacturing graduates will be perfect for. It was good to talk to students learning electrical skills.”

Kelly Carey, a human resources representative with Eagle Aviation, knows about TSTC’s aviation students. She said the job fair allowed her to meet students from other programs.

“The students are always eager to learn about our company and are always approachable,” she said.

Acadian Ambulance Service recruiter Ryan Macartney was attending the job fair for the first time. He left with a good first impression of TSTC students.

“I was able to meet good-quality people who did not know about our company,” he said. “It was good to show the students about opportunities available outside of the West Texas region. We have services available in the major cities of Texas which they were excited to learn about.”

TSTC students took the time to meet decision-makers from both inside and outside of their career fields.

Rosendo Rodriguez, both an Automotive Technology and a Wind Energy Technology student, said he wanted to meet different representatives. Loureiro quickly caught his attention because he was wearing a safety harness.

“It drew me in because I was familiar with the equipment,” Rodriguez said. “This was a good opportunity for me to meet important employers.”

Kelli Travis, Vocational Nursing student who will graduate in December, said she was able to visit with her future employer, Hendrick Medical Center.

“They were able to tell me in detail about the opportunities I will have, including studying to become a registered nurse,” she said. “It was good to learn more about the opportunities I will have with Hendrick.”

Kayleb Carter, a Welding Technology student, said his first experience with the job fair was an eye-opener.

“I did not realize how many companies are looking for people to work for them,” he said. “It is good that TSTC brings them to us to visit.”

TSTC hosts an Industry Job Fair each fall and spring, allowing industry partners to meet current students and alumni.
