(HARLINGEN, Texas) – When Brandon Hall graduates from Texas State Technical College’s Vocational Nursing program at the college’s Summer 2026 Commencement next week, he will become the student to earn three credentials as well as his certificate of completion.
He earned credentials as a certified nurse aide, certified medication aide and his intravenous certification. The program added opportunities for students to test for the credentials at Breckenridge, Harlingen and Sweetwater last year.
“It was a suggestion from our instructors to pursue the certifications and I followed through with it,” Hall said. “Being good at the fundamentals of helping patients is important.”

Hall’s decision to pursue the credentials also reflects a mindset shaped by previous leadership experience. Having held management roles has helped him better understand the practice of medical professionals.
“You can lead with confidence because you have seen what the job takes,” he said.
Robert Morman, a vocational nursing instructor, said earning additional credentials can give students an advantage in the workforce.
“These opportunities can bolster a resume and set them apart as a candidate for employment,” he said.
Shirley R. Menguito, director of nursing and clinical services at Solara Specialty Hospitals in Harlingen, said graduates who have additional skills can give employers something not seen during an interview.

“It gives us that confidence to hire them because the skills are already there,” she said.
As he prepares for graduation, Hall said TSTC has helped make a goal feel achievable.
“I am going to get a vast amount of experience during my first-year as a vocational nurse,” he said.
