Cynthia Esquivel, an Emergency Medical Services student at TSTC’s Harlingen campus, gets ready to move into her dorm.

(HARLINGEN, Texas) – Move-in day on Aug. 29 at Texas State Technical College’s Harlingen campus saw dorms buzzing with activity as students eager to pursue educations in high-demand technical careers arrived. Fall semester classes start Sept. 2.

Among the new students are Cynthia Esquivel, Josiah Fisher and Jayden Gil. Each one shared why TSTC aligned with their future career goals.

Esquivel, of La Feria, is pursuing an Emergency Medical Service – EMT certificate of completion. A campus tour led by TSTC representatives made a strong impression on her.

“I visited TSTC during my senior year, and I loved the environment,” Esquivel said. “I’m looking forward to not only becoming an emergency medical technician someday, but also taking on the responsibility of living in a dorm.”

Fisher, a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, plans to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in Automotive. A specific course in that program stood out to him and factored into his decision to attend the college.

“Only TSTC offered an Automotive Engine Performance Analysis course in their automotive associate degree plan, compared to other colleges I researched online,” he said. “I love learning about automobiles, and that course immediately caught my attention.”

Gil, of San Antonio, is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Wind Energy. His curiosity about the Papalote Creek Wind Farm on Interstate Highway 37 between Corpus Christi and San Antonio inspired him to pursue a career in renewable energy.

“Choosing TSTC was an easy choice since they offered both the Wind Energy program and student housing,” he said. “I enjoy working with my hands, I love to learn, and the job of a wind energy technician is unique.”

Yvette Garza-Garcia, TSTC’s student housing director in Harlingen, said living on campus offers students an experience they cannot learn in a classroom.

“We partner with some departments on campus to ensure that our residents have access to services such as counseling services, wellness events and quiet study spaces,” Garza-Garcia said.
