(RED OAK, Texas) – While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in supply chain operations management, Moises Guerrero, of Richardson, briefly worked as an auto mechanic.
“It was a lot for me to handle because I had a lot of classes and some other things going on. I left the shop, but I still had the interest and wanted to return,” he said. “I decided to look into it, and I saw that Texas State Technical College was offering the Diesel Equipment program.”
Guerrero enrolled at TSTC days after he received his bachelor’s degree. However, even before his time at the auto shop, he grew up watching and helping his father maintain his collection of vehicles.
“I just like tinkering with things and the personal satisfaction of getting things fixed,” he said.
Using his past and current experience, Guerrero regularly finds himself helping his fellow students with their work.
“I’m one of the older students so if they need help, I help guide them,” he said. “It’s just a natural instinct of mine.”
Guerrero said that a student’s experience with the Diesel Equipment program largely depends on how much they apply themselves. One of the most challenging yet important lessons he has learned is accepting that there are times where he will fail.
“It’s not easy to accept that,” he said. “You’re going to fail eventually in the field whether you like it or not, but it’s just a fact. Learn from it and move on.”
Guerrero said he has also formed strong connections with his instructors. Eric Wheeler, a Diesel Equipment instructor, said Guerrero leads by example, and turns every challenge into a chance to learn and inspire others.
“He does not just chase grades. He chases understanding and lifts everyone around him while doing it,” Wheeler said. “True excellence is a habit for him, shown in his daily dedication, quiet leadership and genuine care for his peers.”
Guerrero is on track to receive his certificate of completion from TSTC in December, and he plans to begin looking for a career before he graduates.
