(HUTTO, Texas) – Texas State Technical College’s Cybersecurity program is expanding its dual enrollment offerings to two high schools in the San Antonio Independent School District.

“This opportunity not only prepares students for lucrative careers in cybersecurity, but also fosters our mission of placing more Texans and securing a technologically adept workforce,” said Megan Hanson, TSTC’s dual enrollment representative at the East Williamson County campus.

About 40 high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors at Thomas Edison High School and the Young Men’s Leadership Academy in San Antonio are registered to take Cybersecurity classes for the first time this month.

“This program will equip the students with foundational knowledge in cybersecurity while earning both high school and college credit,” Hanson said. “Students will gain hands-on experience and access to cutting-edge technology.”

Hanson said that even though the students will take Cybersecurity courses online, they will have access at their campuses to computer labs and a high school instructor to guide them.

This marks the first time that TSTC has entered into a dual enrollment partnership with the school district.

“We were already looking for additional opportunities for our cybersecurity and information technology pathways, and the TSTC program offered flexibility, accountability and age-appropriate rigor,” a San Antonio ISD representative wrote in a media statement.

TSTC’s Cybersecurity program is available online statewide and in a hybrid format at six of the college’s 10 campuses. The program has an associate degree, an advanced technical certificate in Digital Forensics Specialist, and two certificates of completion.

“Cybersecurity provides dual enrollment students with a hands-on approach to learning about computer hardware and software in a more relaxed, self-guided environment,” said Stuart McLennan, a TSTC Cybersecurity instructor at the East Williamson County campus. “These courses teach the majority of topics covered in several industry-standard certifications, which better prepares them for an entry-level job shortly after graduation.”
