(ROSENBERG, Texas) – As manufacturers across the Houston area search for skilled machinists, Texas State Technical College’s Precision Machining program in Fort Bend County is preparing students for careers.
While automation and advanced technology continue to transform manufacturing, skilled machinists remain critical to producing parts used in aerospace, energy, medical device, transportation and industrial manufacturing.
“Our program faculty emphasizes the development of the senses and the ability to think for oneself,” said Taylor Marze, a Precision Machining instructor. “We strive to develop a sense of camaraderie and teamwork within our cohorts that leads to successful individual and collaborative results. We also stress the importance of earning certifications through Mastercam, SolidWorks and Titans of CNC Academy.”

Students gain hands-on experience using industry-standard manual and computer numerical control machining equipment while also learning blueprint reading, precision measurement, programming and quality control.
Anna Mohar, who is pursuing an associate degree, said working with industry-standard equipment has given her a better understanding of what to expect in the field.
“I understand the manufacturing process much better,” the La Marque native said. “The knowledge and hands-on experience I continue to gain at TSTC will help me transition into the job I will be hired to do.”
As manufacturing continues to expand throughout the region, employers are looking for machinists who can contribute immediately to production and help meet growing demand.

Simon Feinsilver, CEO of Centerline Manufacturing in Houston, said hiring skilled workers has become increasingly important as the company has expanded into new industries.
“The students from TSTC that we have hired come in with a knowledge base that allows them to contribute quickly,” he said. “It has helped us close that gap a little bit.”
TSTC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree and a certificate of completion, at its Fort Bend County, Harlingen, Marshall, North Texas, Waco and Williamson County campuses.
Registration for the fall semester is now underway at TSTC. For more information, visit TSTC.edu.
