(HARLINGEN, Texas) – Texas State Technical College’s Building Construction Technology program recently collaborated with the United Way of Northern Cameron County for a day of giving back during the Build-a-Bed Build Day event on Saturday, June 28, at TSTC’s Harlingen campus.
TSTC students and volunteers from the community, including TSTC Board of Regents member and United Way of Northern Cameron County board member Lizzy de la Garza Putegnat, joined forces to help construct and paint 20 twin beds for students in need at the Lyford CISD and Santa Maria ISD using some materials donated by Matt’s Building Materials in Harlingen.
“It’s shocking to learn how many kids are growing up without a bed at home,” said Jennifer Allen, executive director of the United Way of Northern Cameron County. “It’s a pleasure to support students at both school districts through this effort.”

Hector Rosa, TSTC’s Building Construction Technology program team lead, said the event’s purpose resonated with the program’s instructors and students.
“The students helped cut the wood, sand it down and assemble the beds, while our instructors guided the volunteers on how to properly use a drill and other items,” Rosa said. “I’m proud of their act of service.”
Ruben Perez, customer service specialist at Matt’s Building Materials, said the company looks for ways to engage with the community.
“When other companies heard that we were involved in building beds for two local school districts, they wanted to join us,” he said. “As a business owner, it’s a great opportunity to bring awareness to an important cause.”
Leonel Hinojosa, who is working toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in Building Construction Technology, said he was glad to volunteer his time.
“It makes me feel good to show how we can make a difference for our youth so they can get a good night’s sleep,” he said.
