(HARLINGEN, Texas) – Not everyone is cut out to be an electrical lineworker — it is a hands-on career that demands technical expertise, bravery and commitment.
For Lila Quintero, an Electrical Lineworker and Management student at Texas State Technical College’s Harlingen campus, the inspiration was close to home. Her uncle had an extensive career in the industry and it piqued her interest.
“(He) told me gender does not determine what work someone is capable of,” she said. “To make a good living, I need to put in the effort.”
Juan Galvan, a former industry foreman, encouraged his niece to enroll because it is a high-demand career.
“The key skills that will help Lila succeed in this job are a commitment to safety, a strong sense of responsibility and respect for the trade,” he said.
Quintero said she enrolled in the program because it aligns with her career goals.
“It brings together my passion for working outdoors with the opportunity to travel,” she said.
Quintero, who is studying for a certificate of completion, said the first semester taught her an important lesson.

“Climbing a pole isn’t easy,” she said. “It requires concentration and confidence. You have to trust yourself, commit to it and just climb without overthinking.”
Quintero said the program has been empowering.
“I am committed to learning the trade in this program,” she said. “I believe more women should consider this field. As long as you’re determined, you can succeed.”
Juan Zavala, a program instructor, said Quintero brings a positive attitude and strong leadership qualities that will help her in the industry.
“Lila is driven and dependable with a solid work ethic,” Zavala said. “We encourage our students to focus on teamwork and keep in mind the purpose behind their hard work.”
The Santa Rosa native said being a lineworker goes beyond having a job.
“It’s about building a future filled with pride and purpose,” she said. “The work we do has a direct impact on communities by keeping the power on and making sure families are safe. That means everything to me.”
TSTC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree and a certificate of completion in Electrical Lineworker and Management at its Abilene, Fort Bend County, Harlingen, Marshall and Waco campuses.
