(HARLINGEN, Texas) – As Texas State Technical College students prepare to transition from college life to the workforce, the Career Services team shared strategies to help them stand out in a competitive job market.
Whether students network at the college’s Industry Job Fair or prepare for a job interview following commencement, they have learned some of the strategies designed to turn a first impression into a potential job offer.
Career advisor Drake Everett emphasized that mastering industry-specific vocabulary helps gain an employer’s trust.
“Learn the proper names of components, tools and actions used so that you can be specific and articulate when talking to employers,” Everett said. “It is important to know what you are talking about, and it is better to know as opposed to sounding that you know.”

Beyond technical knowledge, career advisor Texas Miller suggested focusing on a strong introduction that clearly defines how a candidate can be an asset to a company.
“Develop a compelling 30-second ‘elevator pitch,’” Miller said. “How will you introduce yourself or convince an employer to review your resume? Also, do not forget to ask for a business card or some form of contact information to reach out to them afterward.”
For students who have not experienced a professional interview, senior career advisor Liane Flores recommended people conduct a mock interview.
“A dry run can help take the fear out of the unknown,” Flores said. “These practice sessions allow students to align their responses with specific job descriptions. This helps turn nerves into professional readiness.”
