(HARLINGEN, Texas) – The idea of enrolling in college can be daunting to some people.
But the team of admissions advisors and enrollment coaches at Texas State Technical College is there to ease an incoming student’s concerns about attending college and develop a plan that aligns with the student’s career interests.
After all, TSTC’s mission is to place more Texans in great-paying jobs.
Carlos Gonzales, Michelle Espinosa and Ivanna Rodriguez are members of the enrollment team at TSTC’s Harlingen campus.
Espinosa said she asks potential students what careers they are interested in and whether they want to work inside or outside.
“I make sure to maintain that eagerness with every potential student about attending TSTC,” she said. “I collect their documents, and we’ll proceed to a program tour. Most importantly, I learn about their situation. That will help me set them up for success at TSTC.”
Gonzales, an enrollment coach, said he addresses common misconceptions that incoming students might have about starting college.
“Many people feel they have to attend a four-year university,” Gonzales said. “I explain that TSTC offers certificates and associate degrees that can help them get into the workforce much faster and potentially land them a high-paying job after they graduate.”
Gonzales said TSTC does its best to support new students.
“We help them fill out forms for scholarships and grants,” Gonzales said.
Rodriguez said a rewarding aspect of her job is helping incoming students overcome barriers.
“I enjoy helping new students understand something such as financial aid better since I’m an alumna of TSTC,” she said. “I remember receiving that help when I was younger. Years later I am that person new students can rely on as an enrollment coach.”
