(HARLINGEN, Texas) – More than 300 Texas State Technical College students connected with potential employers, and explored career opportunities, during the Industry Job Fair on Thursday, Nov. 5.

The networking event brought some 40 employers to the Harlingen campus, giving students and alumni a chance to learn about workforce needs, discuss careers and build professional connections.

The participating employers included Benevis of Jasper, Georgia; Koenig & Bauer in Dallas; and Spawglass in Harlingen. Representatives discussed the skills, qualifications and personal qualities they value when recruiting potential employees.

“There are three things that our company looks for,” said Justin Damans, a field acquisition specialist for Benevis. “We look for somebody who is willing to work with kids, willing to work with a team and a person who can communicate with that team and be efficient.”

Benevis operates 120 dental offices in 13 states and recruits hygienists to serve patients, including children and underserved families.

Erika Luneau, director of human resources for Koenig & Bauer, said many individuals are unaware of the career opportunities the German printing press manufacturer offers.

“Many people are not aware of printing, how important it is and how it touches their life every single day,” she said.

Luneau said the company recruits TSTC students specifically for an apprenticeship program in field service.

“We look at soft skills, confidence levels and responsibility,” she said.

Mike Fuentes, a project executive at SpawGlass, emphasized the importance of adaptability and a willingness to learn as technology and industry demands evolve.

“Being able to think on your feet, adapt to new technologies, be teachable and coachable is essential,” he said.

Fuentes said that professional presentation and a strong work ethic can make a difference when candidates meet potential employers.

“You have to earn your position, your role and the only way to do that is to show up every day,” he said.
