(HARLINGEN, Texas) – Texas State Technical College’s Harlingen campus welcomed more than 1,900 students to begin the spring 2023 semester on Monday, Jan. 9.

Returning students were reacquainted with friends, while new students met their classmates and instructors introduced their curriculums.

TSTC is thrilled to welcome back in-person labs for both TSTC’s Cybersecurity and Drafting and Design programs,” said Rebeca Villanueva-Hernandez, TSTC’s enrollment executive in Harlingen. “The Enrollment Center will continue to serve the community and help place more Texans in great-paying jobs.”

Lorena Garza-Garcia, TSTC’s student housing director in Harlingen, said student residents participated in a variety of Welcome Week activities.

“The Student Housing team provided a game and snack offerings,” she said. “A milkshake social capped off the spring semester’s first week. Other activities will be announced in the upcoming weeks.”

Lisa Garza, TSTC’s Advocacy and Resource Center coordinator, said her department will host a variety of events as well.

“The Advocacy and Resource Center will host a Community Resource Fair on Feb. 15,” she said. “TSTC students will have the opportunity to learn more about resources that are available to them at the college and other area resource services. Future events include the Advocacy and Resource Center information sessions. TSTC students can visit the Culture of Caring webpage at https://sites.google.com/tstc.edu/culture-of-caring/home for more information.”

Arumi Hernandez, of San Benito, is a second-semester Drafting and Design student who is looking forward to her AutoCAD course.

“In that class we begin to draw our floor plans,” she said. “My instructors are helpful because I don’t want to fall behind. They do a great job by helping me understand certain subject areas.”

Tatum Medina, who is a student in the Surgical Technology program, said this is her first time attending TSTC.

“I like how small the college is, and my fellow classmates have been cooperative,” she said. “I have enjoyed having one-on-one conversations with my instructors. That has made my college experience meaningful.”
