A surgical technologist’s job is to help with the general functions in and around the operating room. Everything from assisting the nurses and surgeons to preparing the operating room for procedures.  Through this work, you will be a part of the medical process and help to make the lives of others better while working in a constantly growing field.

Program Details

You will receive hands-on instruction and supervised clinical experience while taking courses in anatomy, physiology, and microbiology. You’ll also increase your pharmacology, medical terminology, and psychology knowledge to prepare you to provide excellent patient care. Our program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and combines classroom instruction with experiential learning in a hospital.

In Harlingen, surgical technology is available through a hybrid format using online learning for didactic delivery and face-to-face lab training in skills and high-fidelity simulation. You will obtain hands-on experience during clinical instruction in a hospital setting.

Requirements to enter Surgical Technology differ from those of other programs; be sure to read the program requirements before enrolling and attend one of our monthly WebEx Information Sessions.

Because this program may prepare you for an occupational license, read additional information about HB1508 Occupational Certification Eligibility.

Certification

The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) is responsible for the national certifying examinations for the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and the Certified Surgical Technologist/Certified First Assistant (CST/CFA). Students must be certified to gain employment.
